Dr. Elijah White, pioneer physician and sub-Indian agent, was born in 1806 in New York state. In 1836, White was appointed by the Methodist Church to serve as a doctor at Jason Lee's Willamette Mission. He served at the mission until 1841, when he disagreed with Lee regarding mission policy and resigned, returning east by ship.
